Booking your child’s first speech therapy evaluation can feel like a big step. Most parents arrive with a mix of hope and nerves, unsure what will happen or what’s expected of them. Before the Appointment
You’ll usually complete a short intake form about your child’s history, milestones, and your specific concerns. It helps to jot down a few notes beforehand: when you first noticed the issue, what your child can and can’t do, and any questions on your mind. Bring any prior reports from your pediatrician if you have them.
What Happens During the Evaluation
The evaluation itself is designed to feel like play, not a test. Our speech-language pathologist will:
- Observe how your child communicates, plays, and interacts
- Assess how well your child understands language (receptive skills)
- Assess how your child expresses themselves — words, sounds, and sentences (expressive skills)
- Check speech clarity and, when relevant, oral-motor and feeding skills
- Ask you questions about what you see at home
Most evaluations take 45 to 60 minutes. Your child won’t be “quizzed” — they’ll be playing, and our therapist reads their skills through that play.
Your Role as the Parent
You’re not a bystander. You know your child better than anyone, and your observations are a core part of the evaluation. You’ll be invited to share what you notice, ask questions, and learn strategies you can start using at home right away.
After the Evaluation: The Plan
Once the assessment is complete, our therapist will explain the findings in plain language — where your child is on track, where there are gaps, and what it means. If therapy is recommended, you’ll get a clear plan with goals and a schedule. If your child is developing typically, you’ll leave with reassurance and tips to keep supporting them.
